DID YOU KNOW?

  • Argentina is home to the world’s largest colonies of Magellanic Penguins and Rockhopper Penguins.
  • The Magellanic penguin, the most prevalent penguin species in Argentina, boasts a population of approximately 1 million breeding pairs along the Patagonian coast, distributed across over 60 colonies.
  • The largest of these colonies, located at Punta Tombo, is home to around 200,000 breeding pairs.
  • Unlike other penguin species in the region, Magellanic penguins are migratory and engage in offshore foraging, with their winter migration taking them as far north as Peru or Brazil. They typically breed in burrows or under bushes and sustain themselves on a diet primarily composed of fish, particularly anchovies and sardines, with occasional supplementation from cephalopods.
